Spoon and Loom

Some people were surprised to hear the oar described as part of a boat.

The spoon is another name for the blade of the oar, certain types of which can also be called a tulip or a shovel; the loom is another name for the shaft. Two thirds of the way up the shaft is the sleeve (including a wearplate) and button (or collar), and at the opposite end from the blade is the handle.
